New Zealand Earthquakes: Seismologists report that a strong 7.1-magnitude earthquake that rocked the Pacific Ocean far north of New Zealand caused a modest tsunami to sweep a neighbouring island. There isn’t any greater danger.
The biggest of the Kermadec Islands, Raoul Island, was the epicentre of Monday’s earthquake, which occurred at 12:41 p.m. according to local time. Raoul Island is located 74 kilometres southeast of the mainland of New Zealand, almost midway between it and Tonga.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) classifies the earthquake as a deep earthquake since it occurred 49 kilometres below the surface of the ocean. Initial estimates of the magnitude were 7.3, however, they were eventually changed to 7.1.
The Kermadec Islands, mostly uninhabited but for a weather and radio station on Raoul Island, were initially under threat from a tsunami, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. Before the alarm was lowered, small tsunami waves were seen on the island.
While assessing the tsunami danger from the earthquake, New Zealand’s (New Zealand Earthquakes) National Emergency Management Agency momentarily advised people to remain out of the ocean and away from the beach, but the recommendation was withdrawn just before 2 p.m.
It is doubtful that the earthquake will have triggered a tsunami that will endanger New Zealand, the agency stated in an update.
The Kermadec Islands of New Zealand and the surrounding area include what is known as the Pacific Ring of Fire, a network of fault lines that circles the Pacific Basin and is prone to powerful earthquakes. There are also volcanic outbursts in the area.
A strong 7.0-magnitude earthquake that occurred on March 16 in the Pacific Ocean near the Kermadec Islands resulted in a little tsunami that Raoul Island saw. It came after a March 4 earthquake with a magnitude of 6.9.
Large earthquakes of great magnitude frequently strike the islands. They were geologically created by a ridge that emerged from the continuing collision of the Australian and Pacific tectonic plates.
