A lawsuit against Ed Sheeran alleges that his song “Thinking Out Loud” plagiarizes the timeless Marvin Gaye song “Let’s Get It On.” The trial for this claim is now under progress. He has been threatening to stop making music totally if found guilty of copyright infringement for the past few months after his attorneys failed tried to have the case dismissed.
According to the New York Post, Ed Sheeran said, when asked what he would do if the plaintiffs won the case, “If that occurs, I’m done. I’m halting… To work my entire life as a singer-songwriter and then minimize it, I find it quite disrespectful.
Ed Sheeran has adamantly maintained that any similarities between his 2014 hit and Gaye’s 1973 song are coincidental and that they are too widespread to be considered copyright infringement. He apparently “belted out various mashups of Van Morrison songs for the courtroom on Monday” in order to make his argument more forcefully, although this probably did not aid him as much as he had hoped.
Structured Asset Sales, a company that holds a portion of “Let’s Get It On” co-author Ed Townsend’s copyrights, filed a federal lawsuit for copyright infringement back in 2018. Justice Louis Stanton ruled in September 2022 that Sheeran and Structured Asset Sales would have to present their cases to a jury, who would then determine if “Thinking Out Loud” indeed plagiarized “Let’s Get It On.”
Ed Sheeran made no mention of how the decision may affect his forthcoming “Mathematics Tour,” which begins this week. Arena performances and a few small-scale theatre performances are included in the North American run. Through StubHub, where orders are completely guaranteed thanks to the company’s FanProtect program, search for seats and discounts. StubHub is a secondary market ticketing marketplace, and depending on demand, costs may be more or cheaper than face value.
The musician gained notoriety over the weekend after his wife Cherry Seaborn said he created “seven songs in four hours” after learning of her cancer diagnosis. Sheeran has previously said that the inspiration for many of the songs on his next album ‘-‘ (Subtract), which is due out on May 5, is the “unbreakable” relationship he had with Seaborn as a result of her sickness.
Sheeran revealed information on a small-scale North American tour last week, which coincides with his stadium tour.
